Similarity of codes and conventions of our indicative music video- J Cole [simba music video]

I have explored different music videos and have compared them with the type of video that our group is going to produce. From my research I have found a music video by J Cole called Simba which plays a part with the codes and conventions of a US music video where it is a UK music video. This music video, Simbar by J Cole is going to be our indicative music video research as this is how we would like our video to look like. I have looked at film language such as mise en scene, camera movement, editing and sound. We will attempt to use different type of edits in our music video such as straight cut where one image will join to another image, jump cuts, dissolve and fade outs. We will use some effective camera shots and angles from the music video Simbar by Joe Cole such as high and low angles shots. High angle shots will make the object look vulnerable and we will be looking down on the subject but there will be quite a lot of low angle shots used in our music video to make the subject detail look more powerful, dominant and in charge.

Finding the right artist

As a group, we explored the main genres we wanted to look at which was mostly rap and grime. We decided that we wanted to go with rap as we did initial research and found out that rap music has the highest selling advantage point in the music industry as rap is global and an effective type of genre that music artists get into. By finding the right artist, we looked into his music by analysing and listening to what type of tracks he has made as we as a group want to explore a UK based music video with the codes and conventions of a US music video where this type of music brings a lot of money to the industry e.g the song by Drake and Lil Wayne Miss me follows this guideline/category. Our artist goes into rap in many different ways where it can be about ambitions, dreams and everday life issues as our music video wants to show a representation of what is happening in the world today, that people in/not in the music industry can achieve their lifelong dream and to explain to spectators about how rap is represented in the UK with the use of US codes and conventions. My partner and I have looked at many different types of lyricists that our US rappers but are known also in the UK such as Snoop Dogg, Nipsey Hussle, Red Cafe, 50 Cent, Lil Wayne, Drake, Gudda Gudda and mainly J Cole. These lyricists are global and they all express rap in a different way such as in the way they grew up and there livelihood.
